How to Calculate Exact Age
Calculating exact age sounds simple — subtract the birth year from the current year — but the precise calculation is more complex. Our calculator uses the most accurate method:
- Years: Start with the difference in birth and calculation years.
- Adjust for month: If the current month is earlier than the birth month, subtract 1 from years (the birthday hasn't occurred yet this year).
- Adjust for day: If the current day is earlier than the birthday in the current month, the birthday hasn't occurred yet — adjust accordingly.
- Calculate remaining months: The months component is calculated after adjusting for day borrowing from the previous month.
- Calculate remaining days: Days remaining after complete months are counted.
Example: Born 15 August 1995, today 19 May 2026. Years = 2026 - 1995 = 31. But August (8) hasn't come yet in May (5), so subtract 1 year: 30 years. Months from August to May = 9 months. Days from 15th to 19th = 4 days. Exact age: 30 years, 9 months, 4 days.
Total Days, Weeks, and Hours You Have Lived
The total count of days, weeks, and hours you have been alive is simply the difference between today and your birth date in those units:
- Total Days: (Today − Birth Date) in milliseconds ÷ 86,400,000 (ms per day)
- Total Weeks: Total Days ÷ 7
- Total Months: Years × 12 + remaining months
- Total Hours: Total Days × 24

How Age Is Counted Around the World
Most countries count age in completed years – you are 0 at birth and turn 1 on your first birthday. This is the system used in India, the UK, the US and for all legal purposes, and it is what this calculator shows. Some traditions count differently. In traditional East Asian age reckoning, a baby was considered 1 year old at birth and everyone added a year at the Lunar New Year. South Korea officially switched to the international system for legal and administrative purposes in June 2023, so the "Korean age" is now used mainly in casual conversation. If you are asked for your age on a form, always give your age in completed years.
Birthdays on 29 February
People born on 29 February – "leaplings" – only see their exact birthday once every four years. In common years, the legal birthday is usually treated as 1 March in the UK and many other countries, while some jurisdictions and most people celebrate on 28 February. This calculator counts a leap-day birthday as reached on 1 March in common years, which is the usual legal convention for turning 18 or 21. The next 29 February birthdays fall in 2028, 2032 and 2036.

Age Calculation for Official Purposes
Government exams, school admissions, job applications and pensions often ask for your age "as on" a specific cut-off date, not today.
