An XML sitemap is a file that lists all the important URLs on your website, helping search engines like Google and Bing discover and index your pages faster. Every website should have a sitemap submitted to Google Search Console.

How to Use the Sitemap Generator

  1. Paste the full URLs of the pages you want search engines to find, one per line.
  2. Choose the change frequency and priority, and whether to add today’s date as the last-modified date.
  3. Generate the XML, then download it as sitemap.xml.
  4. Upload the file to the root folder of your website so it is available at yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml.

How to Submit Your Sitemap to Google

Open Google Search Console, select your property and go to Sitemaps. Enter sitemap.xml and press Submit. Google will report how many URLs it discovered and any errors. Do the same in Bing Webmaster Tools, and add a line such as Sitemap: https://yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml to your robots.txt file – our robots.txt generator can do this for you.

Sitemap Best Practices

  • Include only canonical, indexable pages that return a 200 status – leave out redirects, 404s and pages marked noindex.
  • Use absolute URLs with https:// and the same domain version (www or non-www) as your site.
  • Keep each sitemap under 50,000 URLs and 50 MB; larger sites should use a sitemap index file.
  • Update the last-modified date only when a page’s content really changes. Google largely ignores the priority and change-frequency fields, so accurate URLs and dates matter most.

Where do I upload my sitemap.xml?

What priority should I set for different pages?

Homepage: 1.0, Category pages: 0.8, Blog posts: 0.7, Static pages (About, Contact): 0.5–0.6. Priority is relative and tells search engines which pages you consider most important.
